Jan Stewart appointed as Chair of the Raine Study

Jan Stewart has been appointed as the Chair of the Raine Study (Unincorporated Joint Venture) Board.

The Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study is one of the most extensive prospective and multi-generational cohorts of pregnancy, childhood, adolescence and now early adulthood to be carried out anywhere in the world.

It was established in 1989 and has since collected an enormous amount of health data on its participants and has published almost 500 pieces of research on the collected data.

Ms Stewart joins the Raine Study Board, following 22 years as the CEO of Lotterywest.

At Lotterywest, Ms Stewart headed the distribution of more than $120 Million in direct grants each year to a wide range of community and charitable organisations.
Her career also included positions of Acting General Manager of the West Australian Ballet and Chief Social Worker at Princess Margaret Hospital. She is now undertaking company directorships and consulting.

Ms Stewart is a graduate of UWA (BA; MSW;Hon.DLitt) and Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Ms Stewart has also held Board positions with Save the Children Australia and Hale School. Currently she is a member of the boards of WA Opera, MercyCare, Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, Country Arts, St Bartholomew’s House, the Feilman Foundation and chairs the Advisory Committee of the Centre for Social Impact at UWA. She has also been the Senior VP with the World Lottery Association and Chair of the Asia Pacific Lottery Association.

She has received several awards including being nominated as a Life Member of the Chamber of Arts and Culture as well as West Australian Ballet. She is an Honorary Member of the World Lottery Association, was awarded a Public Service Medal and an University of Western Australia Medal and subsequently was conferred with an honorary degree.

Raine Study Director, Professor Peter Eastwood, said Ms Stewart’s skills were a huge asset to the future of the Raine Study.

“Jan brings strategic planning, leadership development, governance and philanthropic skills to the Raine Study and we are honoured to have her as Chair of the Board,” he said.

“The Raine Study’s purpose is to improve human health and well-being and the data collected since 1989 has done, and will continue to, shape public health and policy over many years to come.

“With someone of Jan’s calibre at the helm, it is an exciting time for the future of the Raine Study and also the health of Western Australians,” Professor Eastwood added.
