Pregnancy and birth

Professor John Newnham
Dr Craig Pennell

Some of the major diseases in adulthood have their origins before or soon after birth. There are several triggers that program the unborn child for subsequent health and disease. The Raine Cohort were recruited at King Edward Memorial Hospital in 1989 and the Womens and Infants Research Foundation at KEMH have remained involved in research on the cohort. The cohort has provided invaluable information on using ultrasound technology, the factors impacting growth in childhood and pregnancy features that place individuals at risk of diabetes and high blood pressure.
