The Cardiovascular Research team are examining cardiovascular health and metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is where a group of risk factors for cardiovascular disease (heart conditions) and precursors of type 2 diabetes occur together. These risk factors include high blood pressure, abnormal lipids , abdominal obesity (excess body fat around the waist) and insulin resistance. Three or more of these factors are known as metabolic syndrome which increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The Raine Study provides comprehensive information on children from the womb to adolescence. This information will help find the ways in which pregnancy and subsequent childhood exposures (physical activity, diet, illnesses) interact with social and environmental factors to affect the long term risk of adult obesity, premature diabetes or heart disease. The study will also provide a basis for future examination of the links between genes, environment and health. 'This group interracts closely with other teams studying this cohort where interests overlap.
